Compared to other institutions, JMU does not have a very expansive or informative biking system for students. The university could afford to take some tips from schools such as Stanford and UC Davis. Stanford promotes the physical aspects of biking by advertising the increased energy biking can give to a person. Stanford also provides a great deal of safety information as well as what a person can do to avoid any biking citations.
UC Davis is another school that JMU could use as a model for their biking program. The information on the website is extensive and informative. There are maps of all bike paths available to students, as well as locations where bikes can be serviced. UC Davis provides educational classes for anyone who wants to brush up on his or her biking knowledge.
JMU currently advertises places to rent bicycles as well as a brief safety overview, but other than that there is very little useful information that can be used by people who want biking to be their primary method of transportation.
JMU can take tips from Stanford and UC Davis by adding safety and educational classes related to biking and the rules of the road that apply to bikers. The city of Harrisonburg could also try to implement more bicycles lanes to promote bike commuters.
