Given the numerous and diverse topic directions provided, it was difficult to select the top three that I found the most interesting. After analyzing and researching each one, I came to the conclusion that my top three directions are the following: Health Education, Safer Routes to School for Kids, and Disability and Mobility Initiatives.
I find myself to be the most interested in the Health Education direction for many reasons. First of all, I have always had a passion for fitness and eating healthy. I enjoy exercising on a regular basis, and I try to keep my diet as natural and organic as possible. Because of these aspects of my life, the Health Education direction stood out to me the most. I also believe that if people would understand the health benefits of walking and biking, they would be more inclined to participate. Being active every day can reduce chronic illnesses, prevent obesity in children, improve blood pressure, along with countless other health benefits. This topic also interests me because I think it is important for the government to stress these health benefits in order to promote a healthier society.
After Health Education, the next topic to strike my attention is safer routes to school for kids. I think that this is an important direction because many more children would walk or bike to school if safety was not as much of a concern. If the government and city officials worked to improve sidewalks, reduce speed limits, add bike lanes, and improve street lighting, the result would be a much healthier and more active youth. Children would be more likely to bike to school which would therefore allow them to start healthy life habits at a young age. These changes and improvements could also encourage adults to walk to bike to work, also improving their health and the overall activity level of society as a whole.
Finally, the last topic direction to interest me is the Disability and Mobility Initiatives. I think that it is important to take these things into consideration in order to allow everyone, including the disabled, to have equal opportunities to enjoy the activities of biking and walking. The initiative set forth by the Wounded Warriors Project was very impressive to me because it showed how important it is to make an effort to allow wounded soldiers to experience biking as a means of entertainment and transportation. I also found this Soldier Ride project interesting and forward thinking because by addressing a problem regarding the disabled, the Wounded Warriors Project was able to engage an entire community, as well as local law enforcements in an attempt to make biking easier for the disabled.
